New Classics

Penguin Graphic Classics has just published the new edition of Akutagawa's Rashomon, with a cover by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, it joins covers of classics by other cartoonists including Voltaire's Candide by Chris Ware, The Portable Dorothy Parker by Seth, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle by Charles Burns and Hans Christian Andersson's Fairy Tales by Anders Nilsen. Chester Brown also provides cover art to D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover, though I don't think it's for sale yet.

King Cat Classix

Did you know that we're publishing a 384-page "best of" collection from the first 50 issues of John Porcellino's King-Cat minicomic? Well, we are and it'll be hitting stores April 2007(-ish.) Until that time, we'll occasionally be running a strip from those fifty issues, some of which were cut and some that'll be in the book.

Paul Moves Out Nominated for a Golden Oak Award

We are pleased to share that Michel Rabagliati's Paul Moves Out has been shortlisted for the Golden Oak Award sponsored by the Ontario Library Association, the award "provides a unique opportunity for new readers in adult literacy programs to read books chosen specifically for them. They can read the books by themselves, with their tutors, or as part of a reading group. In this, the first year of the Golden Oak Book Club, ten outstanding Canadian titles are recommended."

Steve Mumford in Boston...

Steve Mumford, the artist behind our book Baghdad Journal currently has an exhibit up through November 19th at the Tufts University Art Gallery. A Boston native, Mumford is profiled in the Globe today and in the Phoenix here and here.

Tomine, Bell and Others in NYC 10/26!

On Thursday, October 26th at 7PM, Adrian Tomine and Gabrielle Bell will be on a panel along with editor and cartoonist Ivan Brunetti and contributors to the Yale University Press book An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons and True Stories. The panel takes places at the 92 St Y, 35 West 67th St in NYC.

All Hail Kevin Huizenga!

Nathalie Atkinson of the Globe & Mail praises Kevin Huizenga in a round-up of this season's graphic novels and anthologies:

Reminder! Dupuy & Berberian in Toronto and Montreal!

With generous support from the French Consulate here in Canada, Dupuy & Berberian will be making rare english-speaking appearances in Toronto and Montreal. (Well, Charles will be speaking english, Philippe will have a translator.) In Toronto on Saturday, October 21st at 3PM, D&B are special guests of the grand literary event IFOA where they will be interviewed by Seth. In Montreal, on Tuesday, October 24th from 6-8:00 PM, D+B will be at Casa Del Popolo (4873 St Laurent) and will interviewed by Dimitri Katadotis of the CBC.

Early Sunday Morning News

The always comics-astute Los Angeles Times features the medium in the Book Review with three reviews today. Critic Richard Raynor smartly juxtaposes two of our seemingly opposite books Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip and Yoshihiro Tatsumi's Abandon the Old In Tokyo and remarks:

Jansson and Tatsumi: two masters, one from the far north, one from the east; the first joyously focused on life's defiant radiance, the other spelling out the bad luck and grinding cruelty with which that machine otherwise known as the world so often seems to operate. They are, really, flip sides of the same sensibility, point-of-view yin and yang. I like to think that they would have passed each other with a thrilled shock of recognition in the street in Helsinki or Osaka...The comic book is a genre whose trendy merits are sometimes acclaimed a little too strenuously these days. But not here. Jansson and Tatsumi are the real deal.

Not surprisingly, after our Canadian Thanksgiving this past Monday, we came into the office to find several interview requests for Guy Delisle to speak about his book Pyongyang: A Journey In North Korea.

D+Q at Puces Pop

Puces Pop is the arts & crafts section of the POP Montreal festival, now in its second year. D+Q will be there: October 7th & 8th at the Canadian Grenadier Guards Armory, 4171 Ave. de l'Esplanade. 12h - 19h.

Broadening the scope of its DIY culture series by incorporating art & film, a fashion show, its first ever artist-run workshops as well as a science fair, PUCES POP has become a full-on arts extravaganza. Also featuring live musical performances by indie artists from all over North America. Bringing together cultural entrepreneurs, performers, and exclusive industry movers and shakers, this marketplace-bazaar will set the scene for a cultural experience like no other.
