 This is one of my all-time favorite comics related images. It's from the one issue of Trump magazine that appeared and what I love is the not only the pictures of the old MAD greats but the fact that for me it embodies this kind of romantic old cartooning New York City black suit working cartoonist ideal. You can just see Jack Davis on the commuter train from Connecticut and then entering the bullpen and rolling up his white sleeves and getting to work at his drawing board. (I have no idea if Jack lived in Connecticut or if he even had to commute and sit next to Will Elder but it's what I like to imagine.)

 I recently picked this old New Yorker up at a friend's store (Monastiraki) here in Montreal. It seems he just came into stacks and stacks of old New Yorkers from the '40s and '50s. Tons of great covers by Steig as well as a bunch of people who you've likely never heard of. Anyways, I mention this because the friend (Billy Mavreas) said he's not really set up for mailorder and doesn't have a list but if you call him up at 514 278 4879, maybe he can work something out.

The OC Weekly weighs in on Gabrielle Bell & Kevin Huizenga. About Lucky: "The book gives off the same quality of wistful lonesomeness that so much of 1980s culture specialized in: indie films or R.E.M albums and the stories of Raymond Carver or Frederick Barthelme." About Curses:"Huizenga is a major talent." In addition,the Austin Chronicle weighs in on Kevin: "Huizenga has a mastery of scope and definition and renders his narratives, with impeccable rhythm, into sequential drawings, as well as words" and Moomin: "Whimsy of the gentlest, cleverest sort".
 There's a lot to love about these giant panels from Briggs' Oh Skin-nay! Not only is he a master of a style of cartooning that's a thing of the past but he's a master of scene setting and gesture as well. I love the weirdness of this depiction of parent-approved closet makeout sessions. It's like Post Office was an honest-to-god method for pairing off future mates in the early 1900s but nowadays would almost certainly get that parent ostracized from the community. Or arrested.

For the past few years, indy comics' home away from home at the annual San Diego Comic-con has been the Piccadilly Lounge, tucked inside the Pickwick Arms Hotel, a safe mile distance from such establishments as Dick's Last Resort and overpriced hotel bars. Just our speed, the Piccadilly was a small, humble bar with very cheap beer, I believe a pint of the Piccadilly Ale cost $2. It was a block away from the Greyhound Station, near the San Diego Jail and lots of 24-hour bail bond centers. Legend has it that a Mr. Brian Ralph stumbled across the bar a few years ago, and since then, the annual (Black Eye? Highwater? Fanta?) beach party met its demise with the rising popularity of the Piccadilly. In fact in 2006, there was no beach party, and almost every cartoonist was in attendance at the Piccadilly including Hernandez, Clowes, Tomine, Millionaire, Crane, Weissman, Huizenga, Nilsen, Davis, Zettwoch, and more. Here are a few pictures from this summer, keep in mind, Tom still needs to figure out the nighttime setting on our camera. If anyone knows of a good quiet dive bar in San Diego, let us know. It seems as if the Piccadilly and the Pickwick have morphed into a "boutique" hotel. **Correction, my good pal Eric Reynolds points out that Jim Blanchard stumbled upon the Piccadilly a good ten years ago when staying at the Pickwick. In fact, I think that is Eric with a backpack in the second picture below.

 Our congratulations go out to Guy Delisle and his family on their newest little member of the family, Alice, born last week in Montpelier, France.
 By all accounts, last night's event at Star Clipper went swimmingly. Tonight, Kevin, Anders, and Gabrielle hit Chicago with a special event at Quimby's. Please come on down and get a big stack of holiday gifts.
 The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, VT will be having a fundraiser and block party this Saturday at 1 PM. The Burlington Free Press writes up the event.

 As I have blogged before, our website is a work in progress. Our latest achievement is our new artist page, a screen shot is above. We still have more artists to add for books in 2007, including Julie Morstad and Pascal Blanchet.
 In this month's issue of Quill and Quire, the magazine selects Shenzhen as one of their top ten books of the year, not one of the top ten graphic novels, but books. We like that. Chicago New City has this to say: "Delisle's funniest, most interesting and most creative work to be published in English to date." Yes, on sale.
 D+Q wants to say congratulations to Ron Rege Jr, as his band-Lavender Diamond-signed with Matador Records. You can hear their beautiful and addicting single "You Broke My Heart" on their myspace page. You can read Ron's comics in The Awake Field, where Lavender Diamond singer Becky Stark coauthored Peace Comics. Yes, The Awake Field is included in our holiday online sale. You may have caught Lavender Diamond on the road with the Decemberists this past Fall, my plea to Matador: Send them to Montreal!
